PHP for Eclipse - PHPeclipse vs PDT

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Back in March somebody questioned the relevance of this plugin referring to PHPeclipse. I think it’s very relevant.

I mentioned my previous experience with Eclipse and PHPeclipse in Eclipse 3.3.0 - Europa (plus plugins!) so I won’t repeat it here.

To rehash and sum up the general attitude that seems to be coming against PHPeclipse - why bother with PHPeclipse, you should be contributing to PDT. We’ve also received the attitude in IRC (#phpeclipse on irc.freenode.net) that we’re causing a division in the community and instead of wasting our time with PHPeclipse we should be contributing to PDT along with the rest of the community. Usually this last seems to be from people who are unfamiliar with Eclipse in general and just discovered PHPeclipse and/or PDT.

Color Picker App Overhaul

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I’ve decided to do a complete overhaul on my Color Picker App as I’m wanting more functionality out of it. There are a number of things I definitely have planned for it, but I’m wanting to get some ideas from other people… Because like the original, I’m probably forgetting a couple things that might make it more user friendly.

CouchDB - A Document Database

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I watched the Racklabs Tech Talk 2: Next Generation Data Storage with CouchDB (speaker: Jan Lehnardt) on Yahoo! video (Part 1, Part 2). Jan also has the slides (in PDF format), as well as some context on the slides, up on his plok - CouchDB Presentation Video.

I have to say this is pretty cool technology. Stop thinking in only relational and transactional database technology. Even though this is at the alpha stage, prepare for this year’s Google’s Summer of Code… There may very well be some huge things again this year.

This would seem to fit very well in building scaling websites. If you’re not quite sure what I mean, check out Brad Fitzpatrick - Behind the Scenes at LiveJournal: Scaling Storytime on Google Video.

I’ve Changed My Mind - I Love Windows Vista!

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Ok, it’s 2am my time so it’s past the time for goofy April Fools’ jokes. This was the post I mentioned I’d hold off on. Special thanks to jaeger for unknowingly giving this post a title.

That’s right. I’ve decided I absolutely love Windows Vista (wikipedia entry). I like it even more than Ubuntu (wikipedia entry).

Virgle Mars Base, BBC Flying Penguins, Kubuntu Hippy Horse

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

Apparently somebody got up pretty early this morning… at least at Google they did. First thing I see this morning is Google & Virgin start a new project - Virgle - Mars Colony. Awesome artist renderings of something I really hope happens in my lifetime… Or at least something like it. The years seem off a bit as I’ve not heard anything about the technology or NASA thinking of doing this lately & haven’t heard anything from normal media about the mars rovers lately.

Later, in IRC, somebody posted a link to Flying penguins found by BBC programme. (more…)
