Virgle Mars Base, BBC Flying Penguins, Kubuntu Hippy Horse

patrick — Tue, 2008-04-01 13:08

Apparently somebody got up pretty early this morning... at least at Google they did. First thing I see this morning is Google & Virgin start a new project - Virgle - Mars Colony. Awesome artist renderings of something I really hope happens in my lifetime... Or at least something like it. The years seem off a bit as I've not heard anything about the technology or NASA thinking of doing this lately & haven't heard anything from normal media about the mars rovers lately.

Later, in IRC, somebody posted a link to Flying penguins found by BBC programme. Flying penguins? What's next, flying pigs? BBC1 viewers will see the penguins not only take flight from the Antarctic wastes, but fly thousands of miles to the Amazonian rainforest to find winter sun. So how exactly did they film the entire flight? It's got to be an April Fools joke. <scroll to the top, check date> - Yep, 1st of April 2008...

...

...2008?

Crap, I hate Google... The years did seem a bit too soon. I do like the article and the pictures are awesome... I can keep dreaming can't I?

Later someone posted a link to the Kubuntu 8.04 Hippy Horse OMeGa pONEy release. The Kubuntu team is hilariously happy to announce... The official inclusion of Automatix (sometimes useful, but more likely to screw up utility for downloading programs not normally in the repositories). New artwork - unicorns and pink fuzzy window borders. Having people go to wikipedia's entry for April Fools' Day... Yeah, somebody had fun putting this together, but it's an obvious April Fools' joke.

Happy April Fools'... Because of the insanity of today's events, I'm going to attempt to wait to post the article I got an idea for until tomorrow.

Update:

Yep, still reading through Virgle's 100 Year Plan and in 2016: Flying to Mars I found this funny little quote - Entertainment - On-board supercomputers perform most ship and life maintenance tasks, up to and including games, movies and other forms of trivially simplistic human entertainment. Crew members will communicate with these machines via an auditory Holistic Artificial Language interface visually mediated by a glowing red light.

Communication will be done via HAL... visually mediated by a glowing red light... I wonder if the first crew will have a Dave?

Update:

Ok, apparently IGN has a lot of money to spend or else has a lot of people that are willing to waste their free time on an April Fools' joke. Legend of Zelda Movie Trailer Debut (HD) - wow! Considering the money, time, & energy on this... Not to mention all of the various video game and comic book movies that have come out (and are planned for the next 3 or 4 years!) I'm pretty sure that this movie would be huge. Too bad it's only an April Fools'.

Update:

No Holds Bard (get it, haha *sigh*) - World of Warcraft has released a new Hero Class - the uh... Bard Hero Class. Undead plays an axe/guitar, orc plays a cello (with a sword instead of a bow [a violin bow, not as in bow & arrow]), tauren (a humanoid cow) playing a uh... cow bell. Kill your foes with the power of ROCK! (at least it's better than rock, paper, scissors). The new interface looks similar to guitar hero. Talents include metal and punk rock.

Blizzard also announces WORLD OF WARCRAFT COMING TO CONSOLES WITH MOLTEN CORE™ (capitalization is theirs)... World of Warcraft: The Molten Core will initially be available for the Atari 2600 platform... For those that don't remember (and probably don't get the joke), the Atari 2600 was released to North America in 1977
