Goodbye Old Job, Hello New

patrick — Tue, 2009-01-13 01:19

After a recent lunch (a couple weeks ago) with my fellow dev co-workers from Spidertel at the China Star Super Buffet we grabbed the customary fortune cookies and headed on our way. Granted the fortunes are printed en masse and completely random, sometimes they're quite interesting.

You will never need to worry about a steady income.

This might terrify some people. For me, I'm looking back over the past couple of years and I see project, after project, after... There have been quite a few. Granted, there's been down time between some of them, but that gives me time to be lazy, catch up on new technologies and new ways of doing things,etc... Sometimes including catching up on some blogging.

Already there's a large list of things that need to be done for this new project. We've discussed what aspects are the most important for launch and those I'll be working on first. Other pieces will be added along the way as we determine what specifically needs to be done.

The last couple of weeks I've been getting questions from various people as to what company I'm going to and what will I be doing... First of all I'm not sure how much I can give away before launch due to the NDA except for some of the tidbits that were given to me before I signed on.

The company is a new start up with the investors here locally in Kansas City. The website itself will be a mix of e-commerce and social networking. I'm not sure I should publicly give away the target market until much closer to the launch date.

The way I found out about this project is that a friend of mine contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in working on a new project. Initially he was planning to work on it in his spare time, but after they told him about a lot of the features they wanted he realized that they really needed a full time dev. As he was overly enjoying the new technology he was getting to play with in his new position he didn't want to give that up, therefore he contacted me.

Currently there's 3 devs and a graphic artist working on the site portion of the project as well as a project manager and copywriter (and other experts brought on when needed, i.e. trademark lawyer). The graphic artist is 1 of the investors. The devs include 2 of my friends (both of whom are working on this part time) and I. My friend who initially told me about the project is handling most of the database stuff, set up some of our project management tools, and dealing with the virtual servers, load-balancing, and such as needed. Our other friend is the front end dev and is handling all of the CSS and Javascript. I'm working on all of the PHP in between. All 3 of us devs will float, but those are the main areas we're working in.

The fun part about this so far is that all 3 of us devs appreciate standards and best practices.
